2019-04-10 - Penzance-St Marys
This was the third Scillies survey of 2019. Rearranged from the previous week, the very motivated team met in Penzance with 2 of the team looking forward to their first Scillies survey. With a grey sky, moderate north easterly wind and flatish sea the survey began optimistically. However, the outbound leg was very quiet with little bird activity throughout. The only sightings were a fleeting lone unidentified dolphin and a single harbour porpoise as we approached the Islands. However the sun shone over the islands and a scenic picnic followed.
The wind picked up slightly for the return leg making scanning more challenging but a pod of 5 common dolphins made a brief appearance. As we neared the coast the sea calmed and the bird activity increased and this cued us to a pod of 12 common dolphins who crossed close to the ship. This proved to be the final action of the survey. Once again, many thanks to Captain Pete and new first mate Vicky for making us so very welcome on the bridge as always.
