Survey details

Survey route: Dover–Calais

Company: DFDS

Sea region: English Channel

Survey start date: 2019-08-03

Number of nights: Day sailing

As I was approaching the terminal to meet the team I noticed a fulmar flying around an area high up in the chalk cliffs overlooking the harbour, as if approaching young.

Officer Gils Dieu gave us a warm welcome which, we appreciated.

Once on board we were invited onto the Bridge enabling us to commence the survey as soon as we had left Dover port with ideal conditions, little wind, overcast with a Seastate 2.

8 minutes in our recorder spotted the first harbour porpoise followed by another incidental sighting of a harbour porpoise 10 minutes later. On the return leg our newest surveyor spotted a pair of harbour porpoise which was another excellent observation.

We would like to thank Captain Roge and the Bridge crew for giving the ORCA survey team the opportunity to carry out our survey on their wonderful Bridge.

Marine Mammal seen:

3 Harbour Porpoise + 1 incidental

Our bird list included:

Herring Gulls and this years young, common or Arctic tern, kittiwake, gannet, great black backed gull, lesser black backed gull, great skua, fulmar, black headed gull and cormorant
