Our final Saga cruise of 2021!

Our final Saga cruise of 2021!

Since 2007, teams of four Marine Mammal Surveyors have been invited onboard Saga’s ships and we have built up a reputation for enhancing the enjoyment of guests' trips and their understanding of marine wildlife.

Our teams on board deliver presentations, wildlife-themed activities and workshops, run deck watches whilst surveying and are on hand to talk to guests about any wildlife seen on the trips. Many guests book on specific cruises just because they know an ORCA team is going to be onboard.

After months of not being at sea, we were delighted to be offered ORCA survey team places aboard their ships, Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery, for the 2021 season. Marine Mammal Surveyors travelled through UK waters, and some were lucky enough to visit The Mediterranean, Canary Islands and Portugal. Our first excited team set off on Sunday 27th June and had a fantastic cruise with sightings of bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises, seals and even Wally the walrus whilst on a local tender taking guests ashore for an excursion on St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly! The luck continued for all our teams and guests alike as they had wonderful sightings and encounters with bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, minke whales, fin whales and even orcas!

Our final Saga cruise of 2021 sets off on Sunday 21st November and the team couldn’t be more excited! The ‘Wonders of the Canary Islands’ cruise will see the Spirit of Discovery travelling across the Bay of Biscay to Madeira, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Portugal. The Bay of Biscay is one of the top five places in the world to see whales, dolphins and porpoises and a third of the world's cetacean species can be seen there. Our expert team will be on hand to help guests spot the magnificent creatures that inhabit these waters, such as fin whales, countless dolphins and elusive beaked whales. Other possible encounters include pilot whales, Risso’s dolphins and even the largest animal on earth, the blue whale! Keep an eye on our social media channels to find out what the team sees!

We would like to say a big thank you to Saga for allowing us to join their cruises in 2021. To the Captains, Cruise Directors and all the staff on the Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure thank you for making our teams feel so welcome. Thank you also to all the guests that joined ORCA teams during their presentations and activities and are out on deck helping us to spot and record so many wonderful sightings.  We are delighted to announce that Saga has once again invited us onboard the Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery in 2022. Teams of four Marine Mammal Surveyors will be on board 10 itineraries travelling to important habitats including the Arctic, the Mediterranean and the Hebrides.

ORCA is one of the UK’s leading whale and dolphin conservation charities, dedicated to the long-term protection of cetaceans and their habitats. Our mission is to give everyone who cares about whales and dolphins an active role in safeguarding their future. You can support our mission by making a donation to ORCA and helping us to continue the vital work that we have built over more than fifteen years of protecting the marine environment.
