The winners for the 2019 Photography Competition have been selected by ORCA Patron, Mark Carwardine.
After some amazing entries, the task was daunting to select winners in two categories - The State of European Cetaceans and Threats to Marine Wildlife.
After careful deliberation, renowned wildlife photographer, conservationist and ORCA Patron Mark Carwardine selected two sensational images as the winners.
The honour of winner in the State of European Cetaceans category has been awarded to Hannah Snead for her minke whale photo taken along the West Coast of Scotland, just off the Island of Coll in August this year. When entering, Hannah said during the trip this photo was taken, they had some great associating minkes and had some lovely sights of their ventral grooves. During judging Mark said ‘A perfectly timed shot, showing interesting behaviour in perfect conditions - what more could you ask?’
Meanwhile, in the category Threats to Marine Wildlife, the winning entry was from James Robbins for his shot of a California sea lion severely entangled on the Farallon Islands with a few inch-deep incisions around its neck. The incision was likely to be from a packing band and sadly unless someone got to this animal, it was highly likely to have died. Mark said: ‘This is a shocking picture but it’s an important one because, sadly, sea lions being garrotted by fishing line is a sight we are seeing more and more frequently.’
With such high quality entries there was also a second prize awarded to Catherine Clark for her image of a bottlenose dolphins in the Moray Firth, breaching from the water. During judging, Mark commented that ‘This shot beautifully captures the spirit of the dolphin and the detail is wonderful - just look at those tooth rake marks on the pectoral fin.’
A huge well done to all of our winners, and thank you to everyone who entered this year. A big thank you also goes to Mark for lending his expertise in judging, and to our friends at Discover Ferries and Jessops for their generous sponsorship of the Photography Competition 2019! We will be announcing plans for 2020’s competition soon so watch this space!
