ORCA Marine Mammal Surveyors recorded 123 cetaceans as they sailed along the south coast of the UK on the ‘Coastal Landscapes of the West’ cruise on board the Saga Spirit of Discovery.
After more than a year, on the 3rd July, a team of four excited volunteer ORCA Marine Mammal Surveyors boarded the Saga Spirit of Discovery in Tilbury, ready to sail along the south coast of the UK visiting Falmouth, Portsmouth, Bristol and the Isles of Scilly.
One of ORCA’s longest-running partnerships is with Saga and since 2007, teams have been on board selected cruises, inspiring passengers and collecting vital scientific data on any whales, dolphins and porpoises sighted during their voyage. In2021, as the cruising industry heads back out to sea after the UK lockdowns, ORCA Teams are joining nine Saga itineraries, cruising some of the most stunning scenery in the UK and hopefully venturing to Croatia and the Canary Islands later in the year.

The ORCA Team had a fabulous time and this report provides a daily account of their sightings and experiences whilst on board and details all the wildlife that was seen during the cruise.
