ORCA OceanWatchers

We have already delivered two online ORCA OceanWatchers courses exclusively for our Marine Mammal Surveyors, with a fantastic response!

Hello everyone,

We hope you and your families are all keeping safe and well.  We hope that you all received the ORCA update email in mid-December, which outlined our plans for 2021. This update can also be found on the Surveyor Network News page.  As part of this update, we let you know about an exciting new work area: ORCA OceanWatchers.  We have already delivered two online ORCA OceanWatchers courses exclusively for our Marine Mammal Surveyors, with a fantastic response.  We just wanted to send a second reminder email to ensure those of you who would like to participate in this training have the opportunity to join a course.  The final courses for ORCA Marine Mammal Surveyors are next week:

  • Wednesday 24th February 2021
  • Sunday 28th February 2021

More information about the course is below.  We have limited spaces, so if you do wish to attend a course please email us on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before midday on Tuesday 23rd February.  Places are extremely limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The OceanWatchers programme will enable citizen scientists to collect effort-based data on incredible whales, dolphins and porpoises no matter the platform they are on (on land or at sea), or the people they are with. Data will be collected via a brand new, bespoke surveying app (available on iOS and Android) and all the skills needed to partake in this programme will be delivered through an interactive online training course. We hope that by offering a flexible and easy-to-use system, more people can get involved with our work and they can collect data more regularly.  This does not replace our high level, distance-sampling ferry surveys, but provides another opportunity for passionate individuals to collect valuable data for cetacean conservation, complementing our two decades of data collection.

ORCA OceanWatchers training courses will go live to the public in Summer 2021, but we would like to offer our most loyal and valued supporters, our incredible Marine Mammal Surveyors, the first opportunity to take part in this programme free of charge.

The courses will run from 10am to 2pm and will provide an in-depth understanding of the exciting ORCA OceanWatchers programme and the new app, as well as information on ORCA's planned work for 2021.

To those that have already attended one of the ORCA OceanWatchers courses – we hope you enjoyed the day and we will be in touch soon with further steps as promised.

If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best wishes,

The ORCA Team
