It is with great sadness indeed that the news has been broken to us about the passing away of one of ORCA’s most loved and respected members and marine mammal surveyors.
Dear Marion Smith who passed away the day before yesterday was such a great friend to many of us, an ORCA stalwart, an icon, a legend even. She has been involved with ORCA since it’s early beginnings and Dave Smith her son too. Marion had numerous surveys under her belt, mostly as a team leader, as well as being a regular member of ORCA teams on the Saga cruises and as a volunteer guide on the popular ORCA Biscay ‘Sea-Safaris’. To me Marion was a great friend, a mentor too as she taught me such a lot and I know that will be the case with many of you who had the pleasure to spend time with her at sea. She had all the time in the world for people and she was also warm and generous. I am sure that I speak for all of us who knew her as we send sincere condolences to her family for their great loss. Our thoughts are with them in the coming days. Marion did so much for marine conservation through her volunteer work with our charity ORCA and with the RSPB too with whom she was an equally ardent supporter. We mourn her death but we celebrate her life too. Rest in Peace Marion. We shall miss you.
Elfyn Pugh (Trustee) on behalf of the ORCA Marine Mammal Surveyor Network.
