Passengers will have a one-of-a-kind experience aboard the research vessel Silurian in some of the most productive waters around the UK.
The Hebrides is a stunning habitat and one of the most important marine spaces around the UK.
Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) have today announced a special offer for ORCA members to join their research surveys in the Hebrides this Spring.
The charity, who are long time friends of ORCA and contribute to the CalMac Ferries Marine Awareness Programme, are giving ORCA members an exclusive discount on the specialist Joint Warrior expedition survey.
Joint Warrior is the largest military exercise in Europe, carried out over a two-week period in the Spring and Autumn off the west coast of Scotland. Each year, monitoring surveys on board HWDT's research vessel Silurian are scheduled to coincide with the Joint Warrior Exercises, during which the crew and our dedicated team of volunteer citizen scientists are trained to collect visual and acoustic data to monitor cetaceans in the area.
The dedicated surveys and specialist equipment aboard Silurian, including the new laser photogrammetry equipment, provides an opportunity for volunteers to gain more experience in a range of research techniques, with survey routes designed specifically to encounter animals in the presence of military vessels.
